Not what we wanted to hear

Today has not been the best day.  Let's start with the good news.  Lincoln was supposed to start the fifth chemo cycle today, but we were able to push it back to next week.  We are planning to go see some friends and the doctor wanted us to be able to enjoy our time and for Lincoln to feel good during.  So, we are happy about that.

Now the bad news.  Yesterday Lincoln had an MRI and today he had a lumbar puncture.  Both are routine before starting the next cycle of chemo.  The oncologist came and spoke with us today about the results of the MRI.  The quick version is that there is a small mass in the same area as his brain tumor was.  It is unclear as to what the mass is, but the doctor believes it is something that will need to be surgically removed. We were told by the neurosurgeon after his operation in December that he was able to remove everything that shouldn’t be there, but follow-up imaging showed that there was something that remained and the plan has been to keep a close eye on it. It does not seem to be growing very quickly, so the surgery (if necessary) would fall after the completion of chemo and before radiation.  The doctor is going to meet with our team, the radiologist, neurosurgeon, and tumor board to discuss this further and develop a plan moving forward.

As of right now, Dave and I have more questions than we have answers.  We are very frustrated, sad, and scared.  We were feeling so optimistic and like we were on the home stretch and now, not so much.  The thought of Lincoln going through another brain surgery is intolerable.

Anyway, we will keep you up to date, hopefully we will have more information next week.  Thank you again for all your support.

Oh Larkin, I’m so very sorry about this setback. I’m glad your doctors are keeping a close eye on everything and found it, but I can’t imagine inching towards the finish line and then having this wrench thrown in the plan. Sending all of our love your way.

Intolerable. So maybe you can avoid engaging with that thought head on right this minute. While you enjoy your time with friends, ask your questions, get through the next chemo, maybe you address the thought of surgery only when you have to. It's going to work on you on its own, while you move through the shock of it. I mean, it seems like you don't have to rush yourselves to accept it and figure everything out right now. That's pressure you don't need all the time. No way this is a streamlined process. When I read reports of this kind of news, I feel like I can't breathe. I just want to breathe with you, breathing love to you!
