This update is a few days later than our typical Thursday update. Mainly because of the fast-paced transition out of Swedish Medical Center to the facility in Houston, Texas. In the last update I mentioned him going to TIRR Memorial Hermann in Houston, Texas for their specialized Disorders of Consciousness (DoC) program. Insurance eventually, and thankfully, approved his admission to this facility and he was transferred on Sunday, 8/31. Angel MedFlight was able to coordinate ground transportation from the Swedish to the King County-Boeing Airfield, then from Houston airport to TIRR Memorial Hermann (we'll deal with the bill for that later 😬).
Tomorrow marks one week of him being in Houston, TX. There were a lot of things going on this week with assessments, medication changes, new routines, new activities, etc., etc. Overall, the care and treatment he gets here has been really great for him. They get him up moving and stimulate him so that he can continue to move forward. The major hiccup this week has been "neurostorming". It happens when his autonomic nervous system kicks in and essentially continues unchecked--high blood pressure, increased temperature, high heart rate, and increased breathing, muscle rigidity, etc.. These symptoms are involuntary and reflect the body’s uncontrolled stress response. They are trying to find a balance between therapies and medications that can help minimize triggers of this while also continuing with his rehabilitation therapies.
Every week they will meet with all the disciplines working on his care and evaluate what's working and what's not and essentially plan for next steps. They also evaluate weekly whether or not his planned discharge date is appropriate. Currently, his discharge date is 10/1 but this is not a firm date and again, will be revaluated this coming week.
That is all for updates this week, if there are any questions, please feel free to ask them below. Photo is in honor of football season starting up. Until next week, friends.
