Hello all and thank you so much for signing up to follow along Kayla and Joe’s journey! We have been completely overwhelmed by the response this page has received, and finding the right words to convey our thanks and appreciation feels impossible. This is our first official “update” on this page so I wanted to give some general background and info to all who may be new to our story.
Kayla was diagnosed in late July/early August and has had a whirlwind couple months attending doctors appointments, consultations and treatments. She started her first round of chemo in early September and it is expected to continue through January (as you may have surmised from the meal requests - which have now all been filled; wow!). We officially hit her halfway mark this past week and feel as though we are really looking at the other side of this part of her treatment. 8 out of 16 treatments DONE, and for the most part, Kayla has felt okay. As an extra part of her process, Kayla opted in to the cold cap treatment that is meant to help maintain her hair and aid in hair growth once she wraps up chemo. Joe has been awesome at helping her get setup in it at her appointments!
Kayla has been incredibly positive and optimistic throughout her journey - though I imagine no one is surprised by that information. Her and Joe have continued to excitedly plan their wedding (happening in the spring next year) and have even begun crafting some goodies for it! I often hear them giggling about it all. It will be the most magical and beautiful celebration! Joe has truly been such an attentive and supportive partner to Kayla throughout this process and journey. He has attended all her appointments with her, listened intently to doctors, and been the shoulder she needs when it all gets overwhelming. Even with a healing Achilles tear, he continues to show up and show out. Our whole family is so grateful for his patience and strength.
While this is not a journey any of us saw ourselves on, we are grateful to have the love and support we have received while on it. The messages of support, and willingness to help wherever we may need it, has kept us going on the hard days and bolstered our souls on the good. “Thank you” doesn’t feel like enough, but it is certainly a good place to start. So, THANK YOU, for everything you have all done for Kayla and our family. We will continue to post updates about Kayla’s journey here and on our social media. Until next time: Just Keep Swimming! 🐠💜
