After two and a half months at UCLA Santa Monica, Katie was finally transferred to the California Rehabilitation Institute (CRI) in Century City on Monday. The move had originally been planned for Friday, but bureaucratic delays postponed it and caused us a good measure of anxiety. Even so, we are deeply thankful that Katie is now at CRI and beginning this next stage of her treatment and rehabilitation.

It was especially encouraging to see how genuinely happy and excited the nurses and hospital staff were for Katie as she left UCLA. They had watched her go from being completely bedridden and unable to bear weight to beginning to walk, albeit with assistance and a walker, around the oncology floor. Their joy at seeing her take this next step was a beautiful reminder of how many people have cared for and encouraged Katie along the way. We are deeply grateful for their kindness, patience, and humble service through some very difficult weeks.

Katie is now receiving three hours of physical and occupational therapy each day. They are working on everything from getting out of bed and using the restroom to safely transferring into a vehicle, all while protecting her spine and avoiding a fall. It is actually a pretty demanding routine, especially for someone still recovering from the side effects of chemotherapy less than ten days ago.

Katie’s husband, Nate, drives from Camarillo each evening and continues to take the night shift with Katie. Jeanne and Scott are staying in Westwood and have been taking a Waymo driverless taxi for the roughly 15-minute ride to CRI. We highly recommend the experience! It is more than a little surreal to climb into a car with no one in the driver’s seat and head off through Los Angeles traffic.

There is also some potentially encouraging medical news. Katie had a restaging CT shortly after her third cycle of chemotherapy. Her doctors have not yet reviewed the results with us, so we don’t want to get ahead of them. But from what we can understand of the report, the liver lesions appear to be shrinking and the widespread bone metastases show signs consistent with response and healing. We are cautiously optimistic that the treatment is moving things in the right direction, and hopefully we will have more to report next week.

Thank you again for all of your prayers, encouragement, and support. Please continue to pray for both physical and spiritual endurance. Katie has experienced severe nausea over the last several days, and we are still trying to determine whether it is related to chemotherapy, medications, diet, or some combination of all three.

There is still so much for Katie, Nate, and all of us to process, and we expect that will continue for a long time to come. We are very much in the middle of this journey, and the road ahead remains long. But for now, we are grateful for the progress we can see, grateful for the people caring for Katie, and grateful to be taking things one day at a time.
