Whom have I in heaven but you?
And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.
My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Psalm 73:25–26

On Monday, Katie had a metal rod, referred to as a nail, placed in her right femur. Doctors say the surgery went well.

Immediately after surgery, Katie was as white as a sheet and in considerable pain. By Tuesday, her pain was controlled, but the pain returned on Wednesday. The level of pain seems to vary considerably from one day to the next.

Physical therapy has been working with Katie a little each day. It is quite an ordeal. They carefully roll her onto her side and lace her into a brace to stabilize and protect her spine. She then sits on the edge of the bed and, with a walker and assistance, stands briefly. These are small steps, but they take a great deal of effort.

Next Monday, August 17, Katie is scheduled for her third of six planned cycles of chemotherapy and targeted therapies. Sometime after Monday’s cycle, they are talking about a two-week stay at an acute rehabilitation facility for intensive therapy. Radiation treatments and possible additional surgeries are also being considered while her remaining cancer treatments continue.

Progress is slow and not always in a straight line. This is definitely a marathon, not a sprint, but we are grateful for each step forward.

Please continue to pray for:

Physical therapy: Safe and effective therapy and that Katie will walk again.

Cancer treatment: Her third cycle of chemotherapy and targeted therapies on Monday, August 17.

Endurance: Physical and spiritual strength for the challenges ahead.
