I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.
Psalm 40:1–2

Katie has now begun her sixth week in the hospital. We are thankful that her second round of chemotherapy has been more manageable than the first. Although she has had difficult days, her side effects have been fewer and less severe, due in part to a reduced chemotherapy dose this cycle.

Katie also received a blood transfusion to increase her red blood cell count. This has already helped improve her energy and lower the rapid heart rate she has experienced in recent weeks.

One of the most encouraging developments has been the slow return of her appetite. After eating almost nothing for the past five weeks, she asked for avocado toast and even enjoyed two spoonfuls of Cherry Garcia ice cream. Those who know the Kohlbush family will appreciate that stopping after only two spoonfuls of ice cream is definitely not normal! It may seem like a small step, but to us it is a meaningful sign that her body is beginning to recover.

As part of the hospital’s normal rotation of inpatient teams, Katie began working with a different oncology care team today. A new attending oncologist and new oncology nurse practitioners are now overseeing her day-to-day care. We are optimistic this team will bring additional experience and fresh perspectives as her treatment continues.

Katie and Nate also met with her orthopedic surgeon. Surgery has tentatively been scheduled for August 10. The plan is to place a rod in her right femur to stabilize her leg. The goal is to allow Katie to stand and pivot safely, an important step toward eventually returning home. Future evaluations will also determine whether surgery may be needed on her left leg and possibly her left arm.

Please continue praying:

For Katie, Nate, and their family. As many of the most urgent medical concerns begin to ease, pray that God would help them process all they have experienced and give them strength, peace, and hope for the journey ahead.

For Katie’s continued recovery. Pray that the chemotherapy will continue to be effective in shrinking the cancer, that her bones will begin to heal, and that her appetite, strength, and blood counts will continue to improve.

For Katie’s upcoming surgery. Pray that God would guide every medical decision, give great skill to her orthopedic surgeon, and grant a successful operation free from complications or infection.

Thank you for continuing to pray, encourage, and walk alongside Katie and Nate during this journey. Your love and support continue to be a tremendous blessing to our entire family.
