Surgery Update 3

Joy has been doing great in her recovery room- honestly SO much better than we had anticipated or could have possibly hoped for! The biggest praise point is that she actually ate her bottle in its entirety the first time we offered it to her!!! If you know much about Joy, you’ll know she has extreme feeding aversions and doesn’t handle pain in her mouth area well at all. At home, typically if there is any pain (as simple as just teething) she stops eating and refuses her bottle. The first time she had a procedure she wouldn’t eat via bottle for nearly a month, last time was an improvement at taking her bottle again after a week. Going into this set of surgeries, one of mine and Daniel’s biggest worries was about her feedings post-op. I was totally prepared to have to syringe feed her while we were here, and possibly at home too, until her pain was under control to the point she felt like she could eat. Let me tell you the tears were FLOWING when we offered her the bottle last night and her face lit up and she chugged the whole thing!!!!!
Her pain management has been a lot better this time too. She has been able to actually sleep for long stretches at a time (6 hours straight last night! I was actually able to sleep for 4.5 of those!! I truly was not expecting to sleep much at all)
Since she’s eating, and also chugging her water when offered, we’ve been able to avoid IV fluids, which would have made it a lot harder to get discharged in the morning. But since she’s intaking well, it’s almost certain we’ll go home sometime in the morning! I’ll update again when that happens ☺️
