We’ve been getting a few questions about hyperbaric oxygen therapy (hbot) and what we hope to see it do for Jonah, so I wanted to share more! We’ll definitely be sharing updates throughout the process as well. I’m so happy that through our journey we’re able to educate others on various treatments and hopefully can help someone else learn about something that could help them!
There’s are several therapies and treatments we want to provide Jonah, but this is the first to set a solid foundation of healing.
First, why are we going to Louisiana?
There are hyperbaric oxygen chambers popping up left and right. We’re going to see Dr Harch at Harch HBOT due to his extensive experience and knowledge in brain injuries and hearing many successful testimonies, we believe he’s the best doctor to help Jonah. He’ll be monitored daily to ensure the protocol is exactly what Jonah needs.
What does HBOT do?
I decided to take the following from Dr Harch’s website to best explain: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, or as it is commonly referred to as, HBOT, is a specialized oxygen treatment that enhances your body’s natural healing process just by breathing 100% oxygen in a total body chamber where atmospheric pressure is increased and controlled. Both the increased pressure and the increased oxygen are bioactive and have independent, overlapping, and interactive effects on our body and disease processes. The increased oxygen at pressure allows extra oxygen to reach all of the damaged tissues and helps the body in the healing process. The combination of increased atmospheric pressure and increased oxygen in a total body chamber treats a wide variety of medical conditions.
Jonah will be doing 40 dives as part of this protocol and then after seeing improvements, will be getting a home chamber to continue to provide the opportunity to heal.
What are the areas of improvement?
For patients with HIE, they have noted improvements in 8 areas: alertness, gross motor, fine motor, tone, balance, oral motor, speech/cognition, and temperament. On average, patients see an improvement in 4-5 areas.
We’re so excited to take on this next adventure and give Jonah every opportunity to heal his brain. We humbly ask you to continue to pray for complete healing of Jonah’s brain, successful outcome of hbot, safe travels, and for Jonah to tolerate being in a new environment and on a different schedule. Please also share this information with anyone else that could find hbot helpful!
