Jolene Sloan
On weekends we try to get outside as much as possible. Around our house there are some great parks with trails, and shorter hikes, which have been perfect for a few hours out with Jolene. For a couple years we could take her easily in a wearable baby carrier. Then the aluminum-frame backpack carrier entered the mix. But now that she's grown so much (and her parents haven't become bodybuilders yet), our options for adventures have dwindled simply because we can't carry her. Over the last year I've become increasingly aware of how many places are inaccessible for the disabled community. It was breaking my heart to have thoughts like, "she might not be able to see this again."
Then I came across a video of this tandem hiking cart by Huckleberry Hiking, which is designed specifically for caregivers to be able to take their kiddos on adventures, no matter their ability. The company was founded by parents caught in the same heart-breaking conundrum we were, and who had the desire and fortitude to make a change.
These carts are expensive but, long story short, Jolene was chosen to receive a grant to cover a large portion of the cost. We are so excited! The order is being placed next week and I expect we'll have it by the end of the month.
JoJo loves being outside and seeing new places, so we're thrilled to have this opportunity for her to see more of the world.
Let the adventures begin (again)!
**(Pic is not ours. If Jolene's legs were that long already I would cry).
