FUNCTIONAL NEUROLOGICAL DISORDER

After a very comprehensive neurological assessment, James acquired this diagnosis on November 1.  Adding another diagnosis felt overwhelming.  However, James's FND explains why he decompensated so quickly.

FND is a problem with how the brain and body send and receive signals.  An event or exposure (illness, injury, mold, stress) sets the FND in motion.  We can speculate about the cause for James, but we do not know for sure.

James's body began to malfunction (POTS symptoms).  His brain (on a subconscious level) began to doubt his body.  In turn, the body malfunctioned more.  The cycle took over his life very quickly.

This last hospitalization focused on treating the FND from a multidisciplinary approach.  He has taken a medical leave of absence from school to give all of his time and energy to his health.  When I tell you progress has been two steps forward, one step back, I want you to hear two things.  We have seen significant progress.  We have also had some of the hardest days of our lives.  James has done the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest the last month as he strives for healing.  I have never been more proud of him.  Being an example for William has been his primary motivation.

Thank you for being on this journey with us.  Our family, friends, and church have carried us through.  Also, the fundraiser has allowed us to choose the best treatment options for James regardless of cost.  We will forever be grateful.

I could say so so much more but I will stop shy of writing a novel.  I am happy to answer any questions.  He gave me permission to share more of his story in hopes of helping someone along the way.

PS - He has not used the wheelchair in a month and has only had one syncopal episode in the last three weeks!
