The Smith Family
The coolest guy, Dave Krueger, was so inspired by Harrison’s journey as a heart warrior that he decided to run the Falmouth Road Race in Harrison’s honor to raise money for the Live4Evan nonprofit organization. 💙
Live4Evan provides subsidized housing for families traveling to Boston while their children receive lifesaving cardiac care. But what they provide is so much more than just an apartment.
It’s a kitchen where families can make a real meal instead of going to the hospital cafeteria. It’s laundry facilities when they’ve been living out of a suitcase. It’s a hot shower, a quiet room, and a comfortable bed. It’s a place without monitors beeping, alarms going off, or people coming in and out every 30 minutes. It’s a refuge during one of the hardest seasons a family can experience.
Live4Evan holds such a special place in our hearts because when we traveled to Boston for Harrison’s first surgeries, we were able to stay in one of their apartments.
I’ve shared this before, but it’s worth mentioning again. While Harrison was in the ICU, I refused to leave his side. I couldn’t imagine him being alone, and I was so consumed with being there for him that I completely neglected myself. Eventually, my body gave out. I ended up with a 107-degree fever and was told I was physically exhausted.
Because I couldn’t go back into the ICU with a fever, my mom and Tate encouraged me to go rest at the Live4Evan apartment. I slept in a real bed, took a hot shower, ate a warm meal, and had a quiet place to recover. It gave me exactly what I needed so I could go back and continue fighting alongside Harrison.
That’s the gift Live4Evan provides. It’s not just a place to stay, but a place where families can breathe.
Unfortunately, Live4Evan has to turn away 86% of applicants every year because there simply isn’t enough housing available. Their goal this year is to purchase an eighth apartment in the same building where we stayed, just a seven-minute walk from Boston Children’s Hospital.
That location matters. It means families don’t have to worry about shuttles, expensive rideshares, or transportation challenges while they’re already carrying so much. It means they can be close to their child while still having a safe place to rest.
We can speak firsthand to how important these apartments are. If you’re able, would you consider sponsoring Dave or sharing his fundraiser? Every donation helps more heart families have access to the same support and refuge that meant so much to our family.
Thank you, Dave, for honoring Harrison and using your miles to help other families walking this same road. We are so grateful. 💙
