Grasley's Journey
Hi everyone,
I wanted to share a more detailed update on Grasley’s hospitalization last week. We went in for updated scans, including an MRI, EEG, and PET scan. We were admitted on Monday, so we stopped her ketogenic therapy diet on Friday beforehand.
On Tuesday morning, after being hooked up to the EEG, the doctors told us she was not having seizures. This completely shocked us because, off keto, she had been having what we thought were her typical atonic head drops—but that wasn’t the case.
After that, we also stopped her medications. She did have a few seizures, but they were very mild. We are incredibly thankful. I asked the epileptologist how she went from having upwards of 80 seizures a day when she was first diagnosed to now having hardly any—even off the diet and medication. They explained that as children grow, their neurological pathways can change. They also mentioned that kids with high energy levels sometimes show better seizure control.
I was amazed to hear this. Grasley has always had high energy, and learning that it may actually be helping her epilepsy was such an incredible moment for us.
We are still staying very cautious since she is now off the main medication she has been on since she was 10 months old. The doctors want to see her again in about a month to recheck her brain wave activity, as they are concerned this medication may have been causing some unusual effects.
This has been such a huge encouragement for our family. We continue to do a lot of therapy with her and keep her involved in many activities. I truly believe God has guided our path, giving us wisdom and placing the right people in our lives to help care for our girl.
We are so thankful and will keep doing everything we can to give her the best possible chance.
