Today, at 7:30 am, the surgeons will start Georges LVAD. This is big. It will take 6-8 hours... at least.
This is major heart surgery where a mechanical pump is implanted to help the ventricle pump blood to the rest of the body. It is a bridge to a heart transplant.
Recovery will likely involve more ICU time, and at least another 2-4 weeks in the hospital. There are several lifestyle changes that will require training, extra precautions and a Hoye sense of humor.
There isn't a caring bridge site -- this is the best source for updates on George and family. If you're interested in getting updates in your inbox -- you can sign up for updates and we'll keep information and updates coming as they are available.
We don't know how George will feel after surgery -- but he could use some uplifting videos. If you're up for sending texts/ videos of support and encouragement to the family we can't guarantee they'll be able to respond to each of them but it would be fun to have videos to share with George when he is ready to see and enjoy your smiling faces!
