David writes in Psalm 138:3, "On the day I called, you(God) answered me; my strength of soul you increased."
As much as David was afflicted by physical forces, we see him thanking God for strengthening his soul, not his body. I can't count how many times I've asked God to take away the pain and then get frustrated when it doesn't go away immediately. Why didn't God answer my prayer? But he did. Every time. Look at the verse again- "on the day I called, you answered me." What made David a man after God's heart was that he understood that God was preparing him for something far greater than his life on this earth. In Psalm 39:4 he says, "O LORD, make me know my end and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am!" God never promised we would go through this life without suffering. Paul returned to the Christians in Lystra after nearly being stoned to death, "strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God" (Acts 14:22).
It's not wrong to pray for healing for our physical bodies. David often prayed for God to remove those who sought his life. But he always ended his prayer praising God for his steadfast love and his salvation. Jesus said in John 16:33, "In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
May strength of your soul be increased today. God bless.
