It has been a big year for Finn! I’m going to do a little recap on all the therapies he has done, the growth we have seen and the total cost out-of-pocket to keep up with these therapies.
Then I will share the exciting things we have planned! We anticipate another full year!
All of this has been possible because of you guys. The prayers have carried us through a really hard year, the encouraging comments and messages lift us up daily, and the financial support has allowed us to pursue life-changing treatments for Finn.
We are forever grateful for those of you who have been on his team and continue to cheer him on!
In the last year, these are the therapies Finn has been able to do!
- Four functional neurology intensives with Dr Melissa Lucas
- Two physical therapy/occupational therapy/feeding therapy intensives at Beelieve
- 40 dives at a hyperbaric oxygen clinic + purchase of a home chamber
- One DMI intensive with Dallas DMI
- One trip to Neorgana in Mexico for MUSE cells and other therapies
- Plus many weekly and monthly appointments like PT, OT, chiropractic care, cranial sacral therapy, etc
Most of that not covered by insurance for a grand total of $67,000 + thousands in travel cost!
It is absolutely worth it to see the improvements Finn has made and improved quality of life! I could get into so many specifics but these are areas where Finn has grown:
- Improved regulation. We used to have to bounce and walk and work hard just to keep him calm daily (even on medication). This is still a work in progress but SO much better. He lets his sister hold him a lot, he is happier sitting cuddled in his corner on the couch, and is generally calm in our arms without having to work for it.
- Weaned all medication, including seizure meds, and he continues to have NO seizures!
- Improving sleep - this is life changing for all of us!
- He is so much more alert and aware of his surroundings, becoming more responsive to changes in his environment, and giving us smiles daily!
- Strength in so many areas: head control, trunk control, engaging through arms and hands, propped sitting, initiating and/or following through with rolling practice, and so much more!
- Oral motor function - cerebral palsy causes low muscle tone and that can affect every muscle in the body, but with proper stimulation and working out that can improve. Finn’s tongue and overall muscle response in his mouth has improved a ton! He has been taking bites of puréed food by mouth and actually responding and swallowing, which is very exciting!
These gains don’t come without a lot of work and sacrifice. It has without a doubt been the most difficult year of our lives, but we are learning to find joy in the simple things, celebrate every victory, and embrace the life we have right in front of us. I will forever be changed by God’s grace that carries us when we are weak, when the grief seems to outweigh the joy, and our circumstances feel too overwhelming to bear on our own. It is definitely not the life we imagined but Finn’s life is truly a blessing, it is an honor to be his family, and I can’t imagine anything but loving him with everything we have.
We anticipate this coming year to be even more costly if we are able to do all that we want for him. MUSE cells were life changing for him and we plan to go back consistently. These treatments will continue to impact him positively for years to come, but the younger he is the greater the change, so we would love to go 3 more times just in the next year.
As always, I will continue to share our plans and his improvements! The most pressing treatments we are looking at in the next few months are a physical therapy intensive, a trip to Mexico for MUSE cells, and feeding therapy intensives. We have been encouraged to really focus on feeding for the next stem cell treatment. We have an opportunity in December for a mini intensive which would start prepping him for his next MUSE cells that we are planning for January. We also would love to get him into a new PT intensive in November!
The cost of these would be $19,700 plus a few thousand in travel.
So that’s our update for this year and our needs in the coming months!!
The fight continues and due to the out of pocket costs we need ongoing support. It is hard to ask for help but we are thankful for those who help bear this burden for us and Finn. We have more fundraisers planned and I am working hard on applying for grants as well to help carry us through this coming year!
