The reality of everyday and an unknown future can be a moment by moment challenge. We spend a lot of time researching the best therapies and treatments for Finn, taking him to appointments, and working with him at home.
We see where we are and where we want to be and those places can feel mountains apart. So we remind ourselves of every way he has overcome, know our love is endless for him no matter what each day holds, and are committed to surrendering his future to Jesus who holds him every day.
One of Finn’s biggest victories has been coming off the ventilator and going home without any oxygen support. A few days after his first emergency brain surgery he was already showing signs of breathing over the vent consistently so they did a couple of trials and when he passed they took him off. He immediately took over breathing on his own. He is a fighter. This time he lasted about 24 hours and his body told us he was not ready so he had to go back on the vent. For the next couple of weeks he went through multiple surgeries, fought an infection, but grew stronger. Once again he showed us that he was trying to breathe on his own consistently and we slowly prepared to extubate him, This time felt much scarier as he had been relying on it for so long, the doctors told us his chances of maintaining on his own were low, and if he didn’t pass this time the recommendation would be a tracheostomy.
We specifically asked God for perfect timing on when the tube needed to come out this time. There were multiple days the doctors were considering doing it but something would come up and Finn would show us he wasn’t ready.
Then after 3 weeks of being on the ventilator we all felt it was time. They transitioned him from being intubated to oxygen support and eventually to room air. It wasn’t without challenges but he did it!
We remind ourselves of that often knowing it is a huge win in his story!
The days can feel long and our faith is tested but we choose to focus on gratefulness, on every victory on this journey, and on our good Father who is our ultimate hope.
