Fiery and the Prof
Hi everyone,
Today makes 2 weeks since the accident. We are blown away by the love and support from our friends and family. We have some of the best family anyone could have forged over the years and we are both just so very overwhelmed. Thank you.
It has been a really hard time emotionally and mentally, in addition to physically.
We are trying our best but it has been difficult.
Finding out how many resources we aren't eligible for, the facility the Prof has been in being... less than ideal being the only thing they are very consistent about at all, the timeline of recovery — everything has just been a lot.
There is no reason to believe that we won't get through this, that the Prof wouldn't make a full enough recovery to do the things they enjoy, or that while it is a long road that it is one we can't make it down with all the people helping us keep going.

I passed my care coordination training thing on Monday, July 6th, which was basically verifying that what I've been doing since the 26th in terms of transfers and the like won't hurt either of us. Since I've been on both sides of that and had been doing it for the Prof specifically for a week and a half already, it was very smooth.
The post-op from the last surgery and surgical consultation for Surgery #2 was yesterday, July 7th. Their leg has been doing what it needs to: the external fixator is holding their bones and keeping the breaks from worsening and the swelling has gone down enough to schedule the next surgery but sadly not enough for surgery to be this week. Surgery has been scheduled though. 🥳✨️
Surgery #2 is on July 15th, so a week from today.
That will be to add plate(s) and pins, and all that fun stuff to start holding their tibia and fibula together once more. Their leg will get to move from an external fixator and plaster splint from hip to toe to simply a ranger brace to protect their knee joint and their 2 incisions until the next post op. That also means their knee will be able to move again instead of being held in place, it'll get to adjust from 0°-30° which after 3 weeks of not moving at all will be a little rough but really nice eventually.
Post op for that surgery is on July 28th, which will be a big milestone for the Prof because that's when they'll start getting to bend their knee a little bit more over time and their brace will get to come off sometimes, and they'll get told exactly when they can start taking showers without bagging their full leg and just using the incision cover that was gifted to us. 💓
Any news on if/when potential Surgery #3 happens will come later.
As for the Prof being able to leave the skilled nurse facility (SNF) the timeline for coming home is likely:

As for the Prof being able to leave the skilled nurse facility (SNF) the timeline for coming home is likely:
- Continuing at the SNF until the next surgery (July 15th)
- Kaiser hospital where the surgery is happening for 1-3 days after the surgery depending on how they are after the surgery and when they meet specific criteria
- We have been told it is actually unlikely for them to need to go back there again so they would likely be released into my care if we meet the criteria for that at that point
- The Prof staying at our friend's more accessible home across the metro area until I finish working on our house being ready and specific concerns can be addressed
- The Prof coming home as soon as their leg can move specific ways and all concerns have been adjusted for, likely in August at some point 🤞🏻🤞🏻
We are just trying our best to hang on for this ride. Also, we think it is VERY **ahem** "silly" 🫣 that med transport between a SNF that is medically required and the hospital sending you to/from the SNF for surgeries and appointments are not at all covered by insurance and you have to pay out of pocket on the spot is... sure something our country does. Haha oh boy is that a choice someone made at some point. 😵💫😅
Anyway, I'm chugging along desperately trying my best to make progress so I can get my spouse home to me sooner but there's a plan in place for commuting back and forth 3-4 days a week to work on the house whenever our friend we'd be staying with is not traveling for work.
The Prof is working their hardest on relaxing, keeping from falling apart, and trying to heal rather than do anything that would push their body too hard.
We have met really lovely people at the SNF so it is likely for us to visit our new friends amongst their patients and to stay in touch with some, and try to get involved with the new members of community around the Prof who have been instrumental in their wellbeing since arriving in that place on June 27th.
Also, I'm sorry for not updating sooner - my motherboard in my streaming/recording computer seems to have done its best to die while I've been busy with the Prof and there are hardware issues making it so I'm just working from mobile right now. 💜
