In medical contexts, what is commonly referred to as a "radiation flare" (more formally called a radiation-induced pain flare) is a temporary increase in pain or discomfort in the exact area being treated shortly after receiving radiation therapy.

Experiencing a sudden spike in pain right after starting cancer treatment can be deeply alarming, often causing patients to worry that the treatment is failing or the cancer is rapidly progressing. However, a radiation flare is generally a sign of the tissue reacting to the therapy rather than a worsening of the disease.
