Deedee Barr
We’re beyond grateful to share that after more than two years of waiting and suffering with kidney disease — ultimately progressing to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) — on Sunday, 4/27, DeeDee received the call to report to the hospital for a double-organ transplant. The life-saving surgery took place on Monday, 4/28, and we’re thrilled to say it was a success!
She is now the proud host of a new kidney and pancreas. We are incredibly thankful for the donor, and our prayers go out to the family and loved ones of the person who gave this life-saving gift.
The new organs have even been formally introduced to the family:
Megan Kensley Barr (kidney) and Morgan Penelope Barr (pancreas).
Yes, you read that right — we named them. DeeDee picked the first names, and her cousin Malika gave them their middle names to match their British personalities. Why British? Well, when we picture them speaking, it’s with accents fit for high tea — think Peppa Pig meets The Crown. These organs didn’t just show up — they made an entrance.

Current Status
DeeDee is currently recovering in the ICU at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital while we await her transfer to a private suite with a beautiful view of the city. Kem (her mom) is right there with her, holding it down with love, faith, and fierce Mama Bear energy.

DeeDee is in pain, but she’s fighting. Her abdomen and back ache from the surgery, and she’s navigating post-op discomfort hour by hour. Yesterday, when the doctor asked her to rate her pain on a scale of 1 to 10, she replied, “11.” The doctor simply nodded — a quiet confirmation that this level of pain was expected, but still incredibly difficult to endure. Even so, she managed to sneak a granola bar on Friday — not exactly doctor-approved, but absolutely classic DeeDee.
Because this is one of the toughest parts of her journey, we’re limiting visitors for now so she can rest and recover without added strain. Pain can impact her blood pressure, and it’s important her vitals stay steady so her body can do the hard work of healing. Please coordinate directly with Kem if you’re considering visiting.
Sending a voice note, a quick text, or a short prayer message is a wonderful way to show love and support while giving her space.
