Dana returned to Duke today for her monthly visit, surrounded by so much love and support. She was fortunate to have Josh, Mom, Dad, Craig, and Jen by her side, along with Nanny, Pops, Grammy, Heather, Caren, Jess, and Haldon joining virtually.
Today brought a mix of news. Her MRI showed some inflammation on the right side of her brain. This could be a result of the immunotherapy and her hard-working immune system (always an overachiever!), or it could be suggestive of very early tumor growth. While it’s concerning enough to warrant a change in treatment, we’re grateful to have a strong plan in place and an incredible medical team guiding us every step of the way as we work to get answers as quickly as possible.
In about six weeks, Dana will have another MRI, and the hope is that it will provide much greater clarity about what’s causing the inflammation.
The team proceeded with the clinical trial injection as planned. In addition, Dana will begin receiving Avastin locally in Colorado. Avastin is a standard treatment and commonly used as part of this trial. It can help reduce inflammation without suppressing her immune system, which is important both for her treatment and for helping doctors better understand what’s happening.
We also discussed other clinical trial options. However, an immediate switch isn’t possible, as that’s simply not how the process works. For now, the focus is on seeing how things unfold over the next six weeks. We also talked about nutrition, hydration, vitamins, and making sure Dana is fueling her body in the best possible way for this journey.
As we have from the very beginning, we remain focused on three things: modern medicine (Duke and UCHealth), the incredible support of our community (including all of you!), and the power of positive thoughts and prayers. Through it all, we continue to stay strong, hopeful, and determined. 💕
What can you do? Please continue sending us positive thoughts, prayers, and good vibes that this inflammation is simply a result of the clinical trial treatment and not tumor growth. Your support means more than words can express, and it helps to know we are not walking this road alone. We are so grateful!
Dana Strong. Stein Strong. 💪💕
