Wednesday started off a really promising day. All the doctors were really happy with how Annie was feeling. They took her off IV nutrition so it was the first time with no IV lines since surgery. We even heard 24-48 hours to discharge.
Then a doctor came in saying her bloodwork from that morning showed a noticeably high white blood cell count. Just to ensure they covered all possibilities, they ordered a CT scan and told her she would be back in no food/drink diet. After a long nervous day of waiting, at 2am we finally heard back that there was unexpected fluid in her abdomen and it was slightly concerning. Not what you want to wake up to.
Thursday morning we got a gameplan from our team of doctors. They had her do another more thorough CT scan to make sure there were no perforations or serious issues.
The results came back and showed mostly the same thing, but there were no signs of perforation luckily which was good news. They decided to have her go through a procedure in interventional radiology to insert a drain to drain and test the fluid for infection.
The procedure went really well and they were happy with the preliminary findings which was a huge relief. Still not out of the woods but we avoided any worse case scenarios or further surgeries.
From mentally getting ready to go home to being told you might need surgery at 2am made for a rough day in a lot of ways, but spirits are back up and a visit from Kayla (sister in law) all the way from MN was a much welcome distraction. From here we wait for results to come back to plan out our road to discharge.
