Dad’s Next Chapter: Building a Safe Space for Recovery

It has been an incredible journey watching Dad fight every single day to recover. He continues to work hard in therapy, celebrating victories that once seemed impossible.
Thanks to the incredible generosity of everyone who has supported him throughout this journey, we’ve already been able to make some important accommodations around the house, including installing grab bars in the bathroom and throughout the main floor of the house
to make it safer for him. We’ve also been able to use a portion of the funds to help pay down some of the medical debt he incurred during his lengthy hospital stay. Those gifts have truly made a difference in his recovery and eased some of the financial burden on our family.
One thing Dad talks about often is getting back to his room. Unfortunately, that’s something that just isn’t possible right now. His bedroom is in the basement, which isn’t handicap accessible or safe for him to navigate, and there isn’t a bathroom on that level either.
Over the past few months, we’ve met with several contractors to explore options for making the home accessible for Dad. After receiving multiple quotes, the lowest estimate came in at $114,000. While we knew this would be a significant expense, seeing that number was overwhelming.
Our goal is simple: to create a safe, handicap-accessible bedroom and bathroom so Dad can continue his recovery at home with the comfort, dignity, and independence he deserves. It would mean the world to him to be able to return to his own space.
