In this fight against metastatic breast cancer using mostly non-traditional modalities, I generally have an appointment every day of the week. Fighting this beast has literally become my full-time job. This week, I thought I would walk you through and explain some of the treatments that you are all helping me access.
Monday is High Dose Vitamin C. When administered intravenously in high doses (75g for those curious), vitamin C acts as a pro-oxidant, generating hydrogen peroxide, which can selectively kill cancer cells without harming normal, healthy cells.
For some strange reason, of all the IVs I get vitamin C makes me feel the worst. I get soooooo crazy thirsty during and after the treatment. It scatters my continuous glucose monitor to inaccurately go sky-high, so I have to be careful to remember it is fake and not to treat it with insulin. Thankfully, I'm able to receive vitamin C from a Nurse Practitioner in my local area, so I can come home quickly, crawl into bed and rest afterwards.
