The missing piece

You’ve likely seen Camilla twist to her right side and the way her body crunches to the right when she’s sitting sometimes.

Well in OT today, we were trying to work on reaching, grasping, and moving an object across her body. (So we were working on vision guided reach, grip strength, and motor planning.) When Camilla held a toy in her right hand, and had to bring the toy either up above her shoulder or to the center of her body, her arm would pull back. Hard.

The OT said that she could feel extreme tightness in Camilla’s right obliques every time right before her arm pulled back.

👉🏼Here’s the conclusion:👈🏼
Camilla has spent so much time laying in her right side and leaning on her right side that her right obliques are incredibly tight. This tightness is restricting her mobility, range of motion, comfort in play, etc. This is ALSO why we can’t get her glasses to stay on. Camilla’s almost constant slight turn to the right pushes the back right part of her glasses forward and off of her face. Our struggle with the glasses likely has little to do with the glasses themselves and everything to do with her right obliques.

📌The adjusted game plan:
We’ve got stretches aaaaand we’ve got some new activities that will be added to our home treatment plan to lengthen that right side.

Just a couple months ago, Camilla was diagnosed with 💥muscular scoliosis💥 The OT was thoroughly shocked nobody (not the orthopedic team or the habilitation team at Duke) informed us about the tightness or told us how we could help her.

And girl you knoooow me💅🏼
Of COURSE, I asked all the questions. And the answered I got fell along the lines of “this just happens to most kids with CP” “you don’t need to worry cause it’s not true scoliosis” “there’s not much anyone can do” “chiropractors aren’t helpful”. Uuuugggghhh!

Imagine going to school for the majority of someone’s childhood (like if a baby was born at the beginning of this drs pursuit for higher education, that baby would be DRIVING by the time the Dr was actually employed) juuuust to do a quick eval and then lift up the shoulders and drop em🤷🏽‍♂️

⏸️Pause. I’m going off topic. The lack of info I previously had is a👏🏼nnoy👏🏼ing👏🏼.
I know it.
You know it.
Let me reel it in and get back on track.

I’m SO glad we found an OT that is proactive and well informed.

AND I’m sooo glad that she is going to send us home with a plan that contains more than just stretches.
💖Making sure Camilla has a positive relationship with growing in her body and in her independence is SUPER important to me, so having games and play activities that will help with her right obliques is ✨everything✨

Thank you🫵🏻🫶🏼 for donating so we could see an amazing team that truly cares for Camilla.
🫂We wouldn’t be here without your love, support, and generosity.
