Brent Wunder and Family
Brent's port placement went well and he is home resting. He's having a little nausea from the anesthesia so hoping a nap will help!
After countless oncology appointments, surgery followups, discussion, and lots of prayer we have determined next steps. Brent will be receiving treatment locally from Dr. French, who will partner with MD Anderson to help guide his treatment plan. Dr. French was the last local oncologist that we saw(number 7), and both Brent and I feel very confident in his ability and plan. Dr. French graduated from Georgia, and completed his fellowship at MD Anderson. He is extremely willing to collaborate with Dr. Eluri at MDA, and still knows doctors that are there. It was one of many God winks along the way that helped guide our decision.
The treatment plan includes 6 months of FOLFOX every 2 weeks. He will go to the infusion center on Mondays, receive an infusion of one of the chemo drugs, fluids, and meds- this will take 4-5 hours. They will then attach a pump to his port which will slow drip the other chemo drug over the course of 46 hours at home. He will then go back to the infusion center to have it removed, and be given more meds and fluids if needed. The goal is to continue this regimen for 12 rounds(6 months). If he begins to have neuropathy or lasting side effects they will consider dose reducing after 3 months. The thought of 6 months of chemo is daunting, but we are praying that this will take care of any microscopic cancer floating around his abdomen. Treatment is set to begin June 1.
This entire process has been daunting, frustrating, and overwhelming. But we are so fortunate to have been able to meet with the best of the best to get their opinions, and we gained so much understanding of the treatments, the tests, and learned something valuable at each and every appointment. We have also been working with a nutritionist that specializes in cancer survivorship. We are doing everything in our power to have Brent strong and ready for chemo. He has been able to see baseball tournaments, watch Cora dance, and be there to see Ella to walk across the stage and get her diploma. We are so thankful.
We would appreciate any and all prayers this week leading into his first treatment. It's been an emotional rollercoaster with Ella graduating and with that milestone passing, knowing we need to get started on treatment. It's starting to hit all of us in different ways, especially the kids. Specific prayer requests:
*Continue to pray for God's protection over Ella, Cora,and Wyatt's hearts as we navigate this next step.
*Pray for Brent's wellbeing and strength with no side effects from chemo.
*Pray that our Faith remains steadfast through these trials and the fear that creeps in
*Pray for unity in our family as this will be difficult on many levels
*Pray that we all remain healthy in order to keep Brent healthy and ready for treatments
*Pray that Brent will be cancer free
