OFF SEASON
After a hard-fought season filled with challenges, coach has finally made it to the off-season—chemo behind him, cancer defeated, and joy ahead. Thank you to our faithful family and friends who never stopped believing in the win.
Champions are made in the off season.
A YEAR AGO this month is when coach finished his chemo and began his off season routine. He has been working hard in the gym with his personal trainer, “Moose”, regaining muscle, strength, and endurance that pancreatic cancer tried to steal from him. And since we have been keeping a close book—cancer lost, again. Coach is feeling better than he has felt in years, even prior to his diagnosis.
To every family member and friend who stayed in the stands with us through this long season—thank you. We’re overjoyed to finally be sliding safely into home with a win.
Since last September Coach has remained busy and active and was able to retire after years of loyalty and dedication serving as a senior partner/chairman/CEO of the real estate investment firm he founded. He coached the Wesleyan Wolves Varsity Baseball team and helped them finish their season strong. He traveled to Mexico with his family this summer. Coach and the team mom recently moved Buckhead where they are 2 streets over from Webb/Georgia and 2 of their grands, Davis and Tripp. He watched his father, Jim Worthington,(the OG coach) turn 100 years old. He spends time serving on the board of directors for SALT next Gen Ministries. And in October he will be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at Baylor School.
Yesterday Coach had routine scans at The Mayo Clinic. A year out is a big milestone. And a scary one too. Though we were feeling confident, Scanxiety is ever present and we know pancreatic cancer is known to come back.
(Short backstory worth sharing…..you have permission to skip ahead, but come back to this)
When Coach first received the terrible phone call and confirmation of a pancreatic tumor we knew we needed to act quickly. Atlanta has amazing doctors and hospitals but we kept reading about The Mayo Clinic as being one of the leading places for pancreatic cancer in particular. My dad humbly mentions to the family… “you know, I hate to ask any special favors, but I do happen to have a business connection to Mayo. I have his business card that the CEO gave me right here in my billfold. The CEO and I have worked together to navigate various logistics as we (his company) are building the brand new hotel on their campus. And six months ago he gave me a tour of the hospital.”
Of course our jaws dropped and we told him NOW is the time to pull strings and ask for favors. This conversation was late on a Friday afternoon, but within 2 hours Coach was on the phone with the Chief of Surgery who made arrangements for him to come to Mayo that Monday and meet with one of the top Pancreatic Surgeons in the Nation. On Wednesday he was on the operating table having his life saving Whipple Procedure…less than a week since finding out about his tumor. The day of surgery, they wanted him up and moving. But they were not sure if he would be able to. He was determined. And he slowly and confidently walked the halls to the end where he looked out of the big windows at the hotel construction. God is in every detail. He is in every business meeting, every hospital operating room, and every diagnosis.
Fast forward to this week… grand opening week for the hotel and one year post chemo for Coach. Yesterday Coach was afforded an opportunity to take a private guided tour of the hotel!

Backstory over….. continue to the good part!
Ladies and gentlemen…. Please stand to your feet as we announce…..
NO EVIDENCE OF DISEASE!!!!!!
THE CROWD GOES WILD………
Angels ARE in the outfield.
There is absolutely zero indication of pancreatic cancer on any scan or any lab. To God be the Glory!
Since coach loves all sports and its football season he states:
“This remains a Hail Mary like miracle and all glory belongs to God. But you guys have made it hard for Him to respond any other way with all your prayers. Thank you. I love you all!”
And to all the fans who remain faithful… We still feel your love, your prayers, and your thoughts! We are so touched by how many of you continue reach out to check in!
From the first pitch to the final out, you’ve cheered us on through every inning of this journey. Thanks to your love and faithfulness, we can now celebrate a walk-off victory together.
