Ashleigh Rhinehart
Hello All,
This morning, when I arrived at the hospital, Ashleigh was sleeping soundly. That is a good thing because the night before her sleep was not great, and she suffered some agitation. She had begun suffering a nosebleed on Wednesday, which they have not yet been able to stop. They have been infusing platelets daily, and she was also infused with a unit of whole blood today. The challenge is that they want to continue administering blood thinners because of clotting concerns, but scans also showed evidence of brain bleeds, so it is a delicate balancing act. Blood thinners are being injected to prevent clotting, and platelets are being infused to control bleeding.
After consulting with the palliative care team, the doctor on the neuro floor, and the RNs who are providing care, there is concern that Ashleigh could pass away in the hospital, and a principal wish of hers is to die at home. With this in mind, and the help of our Doula, I feel like mountains were moved today to get hospice up and running at home on Sunday. We expect a medical transport to arrive around 11 am Sunday, to bring Ashleigh home.
We are arranging the house as Ashleigh had talked with us about months ago. We are putting a mechanized bed upstairs in the living room so she can always have people around.
Our sweet girl’s body is wearing out. 5-1/2 years of chemo have taken their toll. Despite multiple prognoses of 6-12 months of survival, Ashleigh has beaten the odds over and over. She beat the most recent prognosis of 6 months with an additional 18. We are all very thankful for the extra time we have had with her.
Please know that another of her wishes was to have people close to her, around her. There are limitations to how many can be here at once, so, if possible, please give us a heads-up if you are coming to see her. Also, please be aware that she is becoming more confused each day, and it is difficult to know what effects that could have on your visit, but she remains our dear sweet Ashleigh.
Peace and Love
