As you know, our mom had her planned heart valve replacement on April 3rd because of aortic stenosis (heart valve problem). Everything went well! But later, she started having really bad stomach pain. We all thought it was just gas from eating. The pain was really bad at first, but after some pain meds, it got a little better overnight.

The next morning (Friday), mom felt a bit better. Her pain was now 2 out of 10, and we thought she could go home after a walk. But her walk didn't go well at all. They did some tests, blood & CT and found out she had a small bowel obstruction and maybe ischemia (not enough blood flow). This meant she needed another surgery right away.

The doctors explained the possible outcomes of the surgery. The best case would be a simple fix, like untwisting her bowel. The worst case would be having to remove a lot of her bowel and using a temporary ostomy bag. Lucky for us, we got somewhere in the middle where they had to resect about 160cm of small bowel. They kept her in ICU and on vent in case they hard to go back to OR. Lucky for us, she didn't need more surgery later!

Mom spent the night in the ICU. She was mostly awake on Saturday but couldn’t speak since she was on a ventilator. Doctors were happy her lactic acid numbers were improving, which is a good sign.

On Saturday, the doctors were checking her a lot and gave her food through a PICC line (a tube in her vein) so her tummy could rest. This is called TPN (nutrition given directly into the bloodstream).

Today, Sunday, they removed the ventilator, which is amazing news! Mom has some pain from surgery, so they gave her medicine to help her rest. It’s normal to feel a bit rough two days after surgery, but we’re hopeful for her recovery.

Mom will stay in the hospital for about 7-10 more days so her digestive tract can heal. The doctors will slowly start feeding her again and make sure everything is okay before she comes home. Thank you all for your texts and understanding our need for some quiet time. Texts are easier for us right now.
