In honor of Adrienne and every heart warrior waiting for their second chance at life 🙏🏽
.) The first successful human heart transplant was performed in 1967 by Dr. Christiaan Barnard in Cape Town, South Africa and is considered one of the greatest medical achievements in human history 🫀
.) The average heart transplant lasts 10-20 years. Many recipients, especially children, will likely need a second transplant later in life
.) A transplanted heart can begin beating within seconds of being connected to a recipient’s blood supply
.) Heart transplant recipients must take immunosuppressant medications every single day for the rest of their lives to prevent their body from rejecting the new organ 💊
.) Due to the immunosuppressants, something as simple as a common cold can become life threatening for a transplant recipient
.) Many recipients go on to run marathons, have children, travel the world, and live full active lives that would have been impossible before their transplant
.) The wait time for a donor heart can range from days to years depending on blood type, body size, location, and medical urgency (We waited at home for a year and 3 months. We’ve been in the hospital for 5 months. A total time of 1 year and 8 months) ⏳
.) More than 85% of heart transplant recipients survive the first year
.) Pediatric heart transplants are especially complex because donor hearts for small children are extremely rare. The size has to match very closely, which makes the wait even harder 🥺
.) Even after a successful transplant, recipients face a lifelong risk of chronic rejection where the body slowly attacks the new heart over time, sometimes without obvious symptoms
.) Every year on their transplant anniversary, many recipients celebrate what they call their “second birthday.” It’s a beautiful reminder that life truly does begin again 🎂
.) Post-transplant life means frequent biopsies, echocardiograms, and hospital visits for life
.) One organ donor can save up to 8 lives. Sign up to be an organ donor here —> http://www.registerme.org
.) There are currently over 3,500 people on the heart transplant waiting list in the United States and not everyone makes it to the top
💜 And perhaps the most powerful fact of all is that this is possible. People fight, they wait, they recover, and they live. Fully and beautifully.
