Dear Friends and Family,
First and foremost, thank you. We are incredibly grateful for the continued prayers, love, encouragement, and support you have shown Trish and our family throughout this journey. We have felt God’s presence through all of this, and we are so thankful for the incredible community He has placed around us.

We are very happy to share that Trish’s major surgery went according to plan. Her surgical team, led by Dr. Oxner and Dr. Gaudet, performed a gastric pull-up procedure to remove the cancerous portion of her esophagus and reconstruct her digestive tract.

During the surgery, the doctors successfully removed approximately 8–10 inches of the cancerous portion of Trish’s esophagus and were able to achieve a 4 cm clear margin from the surgical cut line.

As the doctors examined her stomach, remaining esophagus, and throat, they did not see any additional abnormal tissue or anything concerning. Everything appeared clear and where it should be, which was very encouraging news.

The surgeons were also able to remove additional lymph nodes, which have been sent for further testing. Those results will help confirm whether the cancer has remained confined to the primary tumor.

We know there is still a lot ahead of us, but we are choosing to celebrate today’s good news and trust God with the days ahead.

Trish had a difficult night leading up to surgery. The medications she needed to take before the operation made her extremely nauseous, and she was unable to get much sleep.

Knowing how hard that night was made today’s successful surgery feel like an even bigger answer to prayer. She has already been through so much, and we are incredibly proud of her strength.

Trish has a significant recovery ahead of her, and the next several days will be very important.
  • ICU Stay: Trish will remain in the ICU for approximately 2–3 days so her medical team can closely monitor her recovery. Initially, she will receive nutrition through an IV while her digestive system begins to heal.
  • Heart Monitoring: Her heart will also be monitored very closely while she is in the ICU. A-fib (atrial fibrillation) can sometimes occur as a side effect or complication following a major surgery like this, so her medical team will be watching her heart rhythm carefully and will address anything that may arise.
  • Feeding Port: Once her doctors determine she is ready, nutrition will gradually be introduced through the feeding port placed in her side.
  • Leak Test & Tube Removal: One of the next major milestones will be a dye test to make sure the surgical connection is completely sealed and there are no leaks. Once the doctors are confident everything has healed properly, they can begin removing some of the tubes and other equipment supporting her recovery.
  • Hospital Stay: Trish will most likely remain in the hospital for approximately 7–9 days, depending on how her recovery progresses and how her body responds to the surgery. Her medical team will determine when she is strong enough and medically ready to go home.

We also want to take a moment to say just how much your support has meant to us.
To everyone who has come to the hospital to sit with us, brought us coffee, meals, snacks, and treats, checked in on us, sent texts, made phone calls, prayed for Trish, or simply reminded us that we aren't walking through this alone, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Visitors & Updates
For now, we do not expect visitors to be able to see Trish while she is recovering in the ICU. As we learn more about visitation and what will be possible once she moves out of the ICU, we will share those updates here.

There is still a long road ahead, but today was a very important step forward.
We are continuing to place Trish in God’s hands and trusting Him through every step of this recovery. We are praying for healing, strength, wisdom for her doctors and nurses, protection from complications, and peace for Trish and our entire family.

Please continue to keep Trish in your prayers as she begins this difficult recovery. We are so grateful to have all of you beside us, and we are trusting that God will continue to carry us through the days ahead.

Queridos amigos y familiares:

I Googled for encouraging Contemporary Christian music & 12 step music for a friend recovering from Cancer surgery & a playlist from you tube was produced. I will send a hard copy to driftwood. If it is permitted, maybe a laptop or tablet can bring comfort to Trish. Sending love & hugs. Prayers not only for full healing, but that everyone will keep their spirits up and be able to take good care sleeping, eating & getting outdoors for a.m.walks.
