NEC Day 4

After James got to experience his first heartbreak in sports the night prior (WMU v UoM) he decided he was going to have a good night and rest and recover well.

This morning’s radiologist reported no overt pneumatosis, which again is radiological evidence of NEC. I am continually amazed by how much reassurance this tiny little man can provide to us.

Today he also got his PICC (peripherally inserted central venous catheter) and he was a brave little guy. He continued to give the nurses a little hell by being a wiggly worm even through his little 1.3mcg of fentanyl. Now he can continue to get his TPN and the rest of his antibiotic course while we continue bowel rest and even through the slow reintroduction of milk. After a PICC is inserted, XRs are done to confirm placement. For his confirmation XR the radiologist commented on his gut appearance and noted no evidence of pneumatosis! That was a pleasant incidental surprise.

I’m including his XR because his heart is so small and perfect and seeing the PICC (small grey line on the left) is wild. What a guy.
