Life is strange and if it were straightforward it would be too easy. Easy would be nice though.
James has continued to acclimate to his temporary first home quite well. This weekend he got to see all his grandparents. He’s also got to the point where if two hands aren’t on him during skin to skin care he starts fussing.
Initially he weighed 1310g and got down to 1180g, 10% of his body weight. He’s already just a little shy of his birth weight, which was our 2 week goal!
His high-flow nasal cannula phase was very short term. The redness on the bridge of his nose cleared up quite quickly, so back to pure CPAP. It was nice to see his face as unobstructed as it was, but he needs the mask. I hope we get back to that soon.
Feeds have progressed very well to the point he’s going back to an increased rate and feeding for 2 1/2 hours out of 3. Again initially he was struggling with lots of vomiting and gas in his belly. Since the US brain cleared him to be prone combined with the continuous feeds, his reflux essentially stopped. On the other end, he’s poopin’ and peein’ like a champ. No issues there, way to go bud.
Fresh labs for the week are a bit funky still yet overall still improving. WBC 20, AlkPhos 500s, renal labs borderline abnormal but fine nonetheless, and bilirubin is still looking good so we’re still able to avoid phototherapy.
Back to Trina for a moment. Looks like we’ve got an answer as to why James came early. Pathology report came in and there was evidence of extensive chorioamnionitis. With the extent of disease, we are incredibly lucky James and Trina are here let alone doing as well as they are. It’s terrifying in retrospect as there just weren’t any signs at all that anything was wrong until that Thursday night before James was born.
