Torvin's Life Changing Therapy
This week things in the chamber are starting to ramp up. Torvin has moved from pressure-only treatment to oxygen, and they are now gradually increasing the oxygen levels. Dr. Harch expects to see increased gains as this phase continues. Many of the questions we had last week have now been answered, which brings a great deal of reassurance.
One of the major questions was whether an adult would need to accompany Torvin in the home chamber and, if so, whether another adult would need to be available to operate the chamber. We learned that Torvin can go in independently and will be able to use his tablet while inside. This frees up Kelby to work, and I can complete administrative tasks while Torvin receives his treatment. Eventually, Torvin will even be able to run the chamber himself, so time is no longer a mitigating factor. Our family is committed to therapies we can administer ourselves as often as Torvin needs. It feels like a no-brainer to continue Hyperbaric Therapy and ABR at home to see how far we can improve his function while reducing pain and spasticity. Our goal is simple: to give Torvin the very best life possible.
Kindergarten curriculum is much more challenging than preschool. The fine motor articulation required to pronounce words can be frustrating for Torvin, but when properly motivated, he continues to work hard and give his very best effort. Each week, his words and sentences are becoming clearer, and he is able to relay more complicated ideas. The other morning he said, “Mom, play hide and seek.” For the first time, on his own, Torvin also asked me for space instead of his usual “Go away,” and he has begun asking, “What’s wrong?” when he notices frustration or sadness. Pretty amazing moments.
On a personal note, things at home are also starting to settle back into normalcy. The truck needed a new fuel pump, but thankfully we were able to get it towed and repaired within 24 hours. My finger is continuing to improve as well, and we all made a great new friend — Guacamole!
As we continue this journey, we’re also working to expand our fundraising efforts to help sustain the therapies that are making such a difference. We are deeply grateful for everyone who has walked alongside our family and supported Torvin’s progress.
So much gratitude.
