Hello from Elly’s Mom:
We checked in at Aurora Mayfair again yesterday morning. Elly started first thing with labs and bloodwork which all came back good enough to get the ok for round two of chemo.
We made our way back into our little corner again where the cold capping machine is. A nurse got Elly set up with all the pre-meds.
We finally got to meet her medical oncologist for the first time in person. He agreed that all the test results looked good, so after some discussion and a brief exam, round two began.
Elly soaked her hair in the sink and then two nurses (from last time) applied the 2-part cap. The first white piece which is velcroed tightly around her head is connected by tubes to the icing machine. A second black cap is then secured over this and pressured tightly against her head. The machine is started and the freezing begins for the next 6+ hours.
Elly brought her electric blanket as well as a heating pad for her back, and a warm hoodie and socks. But no amount of warm clothes can compensate for the icicles forming on her head. 😥
As before, first into the port are anti-anxiety and anti-nausea meds. Then the “red devil” chemo was injected manually followed by the slow drip of the 2nd chemo. Then another 3 hour freezing wait!
To make the time go by faster of course we have to have food and snacks! Elly opted for Qdoba delivered right to the infusion center by DoorDash. Her poor Dad went down to get the order from the driver and was told he couldn’t give it to him without Elly’s pin! Ooops! Just another little complication!
Elly did not get a nap this time. Trying to keep her mind off her freezing head was a challenge. This is where you all showed up to help. Many of you have sent cards, emails and notes which we are staggering for her to enjoy several during each chemo session (THANK YOU!). We brought some with us this week and as I read your words of encouragement and Scripture to her, we shed tears of gratitude. What a blessing you all have been!
Alex is doing his best to manage his work schedule and care for their young family when he gets home each day. Having meals provided is a HUGE weight off of him when Elly isn't well enough to fix dinners. More dates have been added to the Volunteer opportunities if you are able to contribute a meal. Restaurant Gift Cards are also great if that's an easier way for you to help. Qdoba, Mission BBQ, El Camino, Cousins Subs, Texas Roadhouse, Buffalo Wild Wings, Noodles & Co are all close by and great ToGo options.
Other needs include rides for Elly to get to local appointments and light household help like putting away clean laundry. Thank you for your generosity!
This is a very scary journey and a lot of the unknown side effects to come are overwhelming at times. Please continue to lift Elly and family before our loving Father. We trust that He will bring her through it all to His glory.
