Some of you know this, not everyone does, but today is our 21 wedding anniversary. We were both 25 when we got married all those years ago. Our entire wedding cost about $500 in 2005 money, a fact I'm pretty happy about. I'm a waste not want not kind of person. When we were married, Hurricane Rita had displaced most of the people who had been invited to come, so there were only 12 or so people there to witness it.
To save a lot of money, we got married on a Thursday, deliberately. Firstly, because it is the Feast of the Holy Rosary. Secondly, weddings cost about 1/3 of what they should on a Thursday. And so we were married in San Antonio, in a quiet church, with only a little bit of noise. We didn't really even have music, only my father-in-law brought a CD player so we could use the Lord of the Rings soundtrack to get me down the aisle next to my dad.
The day before had been close to 115 degrees, it was muggy and horrible. But the day we were married it was 67 degrees, and God blessed us with a beautiful rain that was so healing, and gave this air of freshness to the whole proceedings. Rain on your wedding day in some traditions, is a sign of good things to come.
I honestly believe in my heart of hearts, that good thing came this year, because my husband is alive to celebrate this day with me.
As far as how he is doing, here is some updates. He went to the Cardiologist today, and there is a lot going on: his blood pressure is too low, his heart rate is too high, and he is trying his best to have energy to walk for more than 30 steps. Yet, the cardiologist is hopeful, and he refereed him to a few more doctors for cardio-rehab in addition to the others ones he is seeing.
PT yesterday has him walking as often as he can, and I see that it's helping. He had a bit more pep in his step as it were. He's trying to walk enough to make 1000 steps a day, or at least that is the goal this week. We are working on it!
He also is getting some treatments for the wounds from the surgery, and we see a few more doctors this week. All in all, he's making tiny progress back toward the man he was. He used to work 6 days a week in the heat, he used to lift huge boxes up and down stairs to deliver mail to apartments and nursing homes. He used to do so much. I'm am hoping that God can get him somewhere near where he was again someday.
Today, we celebrated the very simple fact that our Great and Wonderful God gave us more days together on this Earth to enjoy each other. God has been incredibly good to us. Those little moments when you get to hold hands again, or just enjoy the silence with the company of the person you love, means so much.
I remember the day we were married. I was so worried that I cried my makeup off. The night before, my husband took my brother (who was his best man) to a Walmart to look at the fishing section for hours on end. We were so nervous to do this, that neither of us could sleep. And then came the rain, and God's healing love poured over the beautiful day, and washed away all the anxiety, and tension. The church was cool inside, the air was fresh, and we had a very simple beautiful day.
21 years later, my husband may not be able to write legible whatsoever because his hand isn't working, or see very well right now, he may not be able to walk much, or feel as comfortable as he used to, his voice is still not quite right after being unconscious so long, and the damage done to his vocal chords by the tubes. Yet, God granted a miracle and he's here, and he's alive, and I love him. As for myself, I didn't dawn a white gown, or cry any makeup off. Today I made him a home made tomato soup with no sodium, or fat, just herbs, vegetables, sodium free chicken broth, and tomatoes. We prayed together this afternoon, and spent the day in a peaceful way, enjoying the proximity of each other as we did different tasks in the same room. It was, by all accounts a pretty perfect day.
Today, we had a simple beautiful day. No rain this time, but, it was simple, and God was here today with us. God has been with us this entire time.
Thank you all for your prayers, the help you have given us, and your blessings. Your prayers especially are working, I know that from the depths of me, that if not for you all praying I would not have him today. I would have missed his laugh, and his dad jokes today, and you saved him with your love of God and asking for help. Please keep praying for us. I do not know when my husband will be well enough to be any semblance of his former self, yet for today, it was a pretty great anniversary.
