Andrew has slept the majority of the day—low platelets (back down to 10) and hemoglobin, plus the infection, are all working against him having any energy. He got one unit of platelets and one unit of whole blood to try and give him a boost for tomorrow. He's also temporarily off his blood thinner due to the low platelets, so that's another reason we need to see the platelets increase soon.
Andrew got a liver MRI today to visualize a spot that was originally thought to be a new fluid collection adjacent to the former abscess that caused sepsis in June. I'd been pushing for more information on this in case it was a new source of infection, but the MRI radiology report said it doesn't appear infected right now. The rest of the report was written in a way that exceeds my acquired medical expertise, but the gist is that there's been significant progression and healthy organ tissue is necrotizing. We really need Andrew to restart chemo for a chance at slowing things down.
Later this week, he will get the biopsy to see if cancer in the bone marrow is preventing his platelets from recovering (as opposed to radiation effects). This is useful information because it changes the risk assessment for getting chemo (which could help to sterilize the bone marrow) with low platelets (typically a bad idea). It's no longer that straightforward, though, given the infection. The biopsy results will take a week or so to come back once the biopsy is done, so it seems that chemo is at least another two weeks away.
