Andrew's diagnosis
The Steinhaus Family
On June 2, Andrew was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreas cancer after weeks of back pain and a sudden onset of jaundice. He was admitted to a non-intensive cardiac floor at NYU, where we remain today.
Since the diagnosis, his team of doctors—palliative care (our fav), neurology, cardiology, oncology, infectious disease, and the primary internal medicine team—have discovered "vegetation" on his heart and blood clots in his leg, which likely caused a pulmonary embolism in his lung and strokes. He started a blood thinner Wednesday night. This is hopefully a good solution to both the clots and strokes. He'll get another head CT soon to ensure the medicine isn't causing a brain bleed or additional strokes.
Later today, he will do an endoscopy where they can see the heart from another angle. The working assumption is that the leg clot traveled up through his bloodstream, through a hole or "shunt" in the heart, and to the lung and brain. They can make structural fixes to the heart if this is the case.
Obviously we are shocked and heartbroken about his diagnosis, but trying to take it one step and one day at a time. Andrew is very open to visitors when appropriate (though there is a 2-person cap in the hospital and the room is very small) and calls and texts. There's been an overwhelming amount of support and love we've already received, and we haven't been able to respond to everyone. Please know that we appreciate you and, if you don't hear back, text us again.
Heads up to anyone who does meet us at the hospital, you will almost certainly be an audience to bedside procedures, bloodwork, doctor visits, etc.—things move very quickly around here.
