The Moody Family
I've spent the better part of these last four weeks in bed. The recovery has been harder than what Stephen or I expected since I'm not only healing from major surgery, but also learning how to manage my ostomy.
Today I returned to the office for the first time!
Stephen was my chauffeur since I'm not yet ready to drive. It was lovely to see everyone again and to join staff meeting. Work stimulates different parts of my brain, and the rusty wheels started turning.
After 17 years of caregiving (both as a teacher and as a mom), I can't deny that it has been refreshing to be cared for by others. I have felt deeply loved by all of you!
However I've missed the joys of work. There's something truly satisfying about getting a job done, making and completing a plan, or contributing to the flourishing of others. I don't know what work will look like in the next few months, but I'm going to enjoy it while I can. The Hinson Church staff has been very patient, flexible, and understanding.
Other parts of my life will hopefully begin to look a bit more normal in the next few weeks. I might try driving again, and soon I can slowly add fruits and vegetables back into my diet. Currently, I'm on a low-fiber diet to help out my small intestines. This means I eat carbs, protein, and dairy. Don't worry, I did eat a [peeled] McIntosh apple, and it was so good!
My first oncology appointment is this Friday, December 6th, so we should know more about what the chemo regimen will look like. Thankfully, my surgeon got such good, clear margins around my tumor that I will NOT need radiation. The chemo will most likely be a six month treatment, but I'll post more details when it's confirmed.
As for now, we are savoring the holidays as a family. Cooper turned twelve and went go-karting with friends for his birthday. Then on Thanksgiving morning, he ran a 5K Turkey Trot with another friend. Silas and Cooper had a blast driving ATVs and a motorcycle with friends on their family's farm. Stephen's college pal came for Thanksgiving dinner-- which featured Stephen's mouth-watering smoked brisket. It was fun for me to see the West Virginia University marching band take part in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade.
Our brand new pre-lit Christmas tree (a generous gift from dear friends) is up and will be decorated soon. We've begun celebrating Advent with our Jesse Tree ornaments and Bible reading.
We're thankful for this window of some normalcy during the Christmas season, and that includes going back to work.
