Cancer-Free

Soon we six will board a plane and fly to Kauai for a Hawaiian family vacation in celebration of my being cancer-free!

We praise God for his kindness and power in allowing the surgeries and chemotherapy to be successful. What a gift to have more time with my family, to be able to regain strength after treatment, and to have a reprieve from invasive measures.

To be declared NED (No Evidence of Disease) is the best possible outcome, and we are grateful God has used the gifts of doctors, nurses, and medicine to bring me to this point. Thank you for your faithful prayers.

Back in November, I had a CT scan that came back clear. We were overjoyed to get that news just before the holidays. And then, just this week, I had my follow-up colonoscopy that also came back clear.

Both tests were sobering as I was confronted again with the memories and emotions of being diagnosed. It was definitely harder to be mentally and emotionally strong when my body was physically weakened by the colonoscopy prep.

And so, the journey forward looks like 5 years of surveillance; which includes a yearly CT scan, blood draws every 3-6 months, and a colonoscopy again in 3 years. The neuropathy in my hands and feet is here to stay, but I’m managing well, and my stamina for walking is steadily improving. I’m also very happy I had the ostomy reversal surgery. My intestinal system is forever changed, but I’m glad to have the bag gone and to make the necessary adjustments in what and when I eat.

One of the griefs of treatment was the time that I lost with Stephen and the kids. Because of the overwhelming fatigue and malaise, I spent days and weeks in bed, unable to participate much in my kids’ lives.

I’m hoping this trip to Hawaii will be restorative and full of family togetherness. We’re planning to eat all the food and spend lazy days at the beach. Thank you for cheering us on and being an integral part of our family’s wholeness.

Here’s to many more cancer-free scans!
