The updates continue!

After so long of nothing much to share, suddenly it seems like we have a flood of info! We already have our surgery date. Logan will be having his rib resection on 9/21. For those who don't know, Logan had surgery in May to remove what we thought was an enchondroma. An enchondroma is a benign tumor. Unfortunately, when we got the pathology back on the tissue from that surgery, that's when we found out this tumor was malignant. During the initial surgery, they scraped away what appeared to be defective bone. This would have been exactly the right surgery if the diagnosis had been benign. 

Now that we know it's cancerous, we need to do a slightly different surgery. This surgery will be removing the affected segment "en bloc" or as a chunk. They'll cut about 2-3 cm on either side of where they believe the tumor to be, based on previous measurements and other expertise. This should give them enough room to ensure they're getting clean margins this time while not removing more than necessary. Much to our dismay, they cannot check the margins in the OR like we previously thought. Bone samples need to be treated first and that takes 24-36 hours.

Thankfully, the doctor we're seeing is very well versed in treating this and we believe in her ability to do what she needs to in order to get Logan closer to remission. We'll be there overnight before we return back home. During this time, we had hoped to stay at Ronald McDonald House. They don't currently have any rooms available the nights we'll be in the area so it looks like we'll have to stay in a hotel.
