Today is TRANSPLANT DAY for Grey! Norah is downstairs now getting her Bone Marrow Harvest and after the cells are counted and sorted, it will be brought up to Grey and given to him!
They are starting Grey on high fluids for the day to help flush out his kidney in preparation for the transplant. After the transplant they have to check his urine at every change to make sure there’s not blood in it. After a few times with no blood, they will stop the fluids.
Greyson is not eating meals right now (just occasionally a snack bag of chips, or a piece of bacon, or something small). The doctors are not worried about this and have said that there comes a point in this process when they no longer eat, and we have reached that point. Because of this, it has always been the plan to place an NG tube to help get a little bit into Greyson’s gut to keep it moving and healthy. Greyson will get the nutrition he needs either through feeds through the tube or with iv nurtrition but either way they want his gut working with little feeds through the tube when possible. His NG will likely be placed tomorrow.
His around the clocks baths are going well and the last one is this evening so we won’t have to be up in the middle of the night for a scheduled bath tonight!
Today starts the counting of the 100 days! Today is Day 0, tomorrow will be Day +1 and so on. The first 100 days after a Bone Marrow Transplant are the days with the highest risk of a secondary problem occurring (such as graft-vs-host disease, infection, or any number of other things). Because of this, we have to stay near the hospital in Atlanta for 100 days. Greyson will be inpatient at the hospital for the next few weeks while his body starts to recover and make his own blood with Norah’s bone marrow. During this time, I believe we will have a good idea if his body is accepting or rejecting the transplant, though GVHD can happen anytime. Once he is discharged from the hospital, we will move to the Ronald Macdonald House on the hospital campus and stay there for a few months until we are able to go back home to Savannah.💚🧡🎗️
