Greyson had a quiet night but at about 7am he started coughing and thrashing and desating down in the 40’s. They had to bag him, suction him, add more sedation, restart his blood pressure medicine to raise it, paralyze him, and go up on his vent settings. They believe it was an acute problem of a mucous plug, but are watching him closely today for more issues.
He is still not stable enough to go down to MRI. The team says the MRI is necessary but they are glad that his movements are bilateral as that indicates it’s likely not caused by a mass or bleed.
They are adding albuterol treatments to help break up the mucus plugs cause by the mucositis. At the same time they will also be giving him a preventative treatment that would plug any bleeding in his lungs since he has a history of bleeding in his lungs (in 2018).
The special test that looks at bacterial DNA came back positive for E.Coli. Since the test looks at DNA, it can detect something that has been fought before and is not currently going on, but his lead BMT doctor does believe we are dealing with E. Coli, likely along with some other things. She thinks he likely aspirated at some point (which is where the foreign body in his lungs came from) and because your mouth carries so much bacteria, it introduced bacteria into his lungs that his body was unable to fight since his counts are low. The doctors have said that it is way too risky to do a biopsy/foreign body removal in his lungs right now but that it would beneficial to do a mini-scope which is less invasive. The mini-scope may be later today.
His kidneys remain injured and it looks like there is blood in his urine again but this hasn’t been tested yet. His liver is getting sicker as well. He is already on the medicine to treat the liver disease he is on the cusp of, but they will adjust some of his antibiotics and such if his liver continues to get sicker. 💚🧡🎗️
