Rehab with a Side of Quesadilla - Olé!

Today marked an important milestone. All of Chelsea’s initial rehab evaluations related to her TBI are now complete.

Occupational Therapy — This included her first full head‑to‑toe shower. OT also evaluated daily living skills such as dressing, personal hygiene, hand strength, coordination, visual‑motor skills, endurance, and how her brain manages everyday tasks that require focus, sequencing, and problem solving. 🛁

Speech Therapy — Speech evaluated more than just speech itself. They assessed swallowing, cognitive‑communication skills, memory, attention, processing speed, word finding, and how she understands and expresses information — all key areas that can be affected by a brain injury. 🗣️

Physical Therapy — PT focused on balance and coordination, along with strength, gait, posture, endurance, and how her body responds to movement and fatigue. 🚶🏼‍♀️

Coming at the end of this week or early next week will be a vestibular therapy evaluation, which will assess for possible vertigo symptoms and determine whether targeted therapy is needed to support balance and dizziness recovery.

All of this work is tiring, and today was no exception. She’s worn out and resting which is exactly what her body and brain need. Rehab will take a lot of energy, but we know it will also be meaningful and rewarding. 🤩

And a bright spot from today: she ate almost an entire chicken quesadilla from MiCancun, her favorite Mexican restaurant, which just happens to be set up in the hospital cafeteria on Tuesday’s for lunch. Olé!💃🏻

We are incredibly thankful for the progress Chelsea has made over the past 25 days. This recovery is a marathon, not a sprint, and we remain focused on supporting her health and healing one thoughtful step at a time. Thank you for continuing to surround our family with so much love, encouragement, and support.💗

How amazing! I’m so inspired by Chelsea’s progress! We “know” her from the DirtDawgs (Daughter, Kaitlin, was on Bart’s team). I work at WakeMed once a week, so if I can bring you anything you might need, don’t hesitate to let me know!
