It's been a while since we last updated on Mike. We decided to post an update as so many have been asking lately how he is doing. We so appreciate all the thoughts and prayers! It's been a long road, and still a long road ahead. We have definitely learned how to be patient during this process and that we leave what we can't control, up to God. After all, God's timing is always perfect and we firmly believe that!
Mike has been feeling so much better and has even gotten out of the house a bit! We praise God that he is getting stronger and healthier each day! Recently, the urologist decided to remove the stent in his ureter as he was consistently getting UTI infections. With the stent being removed, it was also decided to put the nephrostomy tube back into his left kidney, to prevent leaking. This means, he now has 2 bags again which he wasn't too excited about. Let's just say Mike is ready to get rid of his accessories!
It's already been a busy Summer with trips back and forth to Vanderbilt in Nashville where we have transferred his care. We have been overwhelmed with the amazing doctors that we have met there! They truly are the "best of the best"! We are so thankful for the care he is getting.
The plan: Unfortunately, we would like to get him completely fixed right now but timing is everything. The surgeons there have a plan that makes sense, but it does require more time... At some point in September, Mike will have 3 surgeries in 1 at Vanderbilt. He has a colon surgeon that will reverse his colostomy, the urology surgeon who will repair and fix his ureter and then a hernia repair surgeon. Mike has now developed a cantaloupe sized abdominal hernia caused by all the surgeries and trauma to his abdomen. They will temporarily fix this during that surgery as well. As I mentioned, timing is everything as right now we are waiting for scar tissue to completely build up so that the surgeons can try and minimize too many future surgeries.
After the surgery in September, Mike will likely need another future hernia repair surgery as they believe the initial surgery can only temporarily fix it. Then, he will also most likely need another colon surgery to fix scar tissue etc. as well. To date, Mike has already had approx. 8-9 surgical procedures trying to maintain things while we let things settle down before the larger surgery.
We are just thankful there is a plan and we still believe that Mike will eventually be fully recovered. Trust the process! We know that there are so many people out there going through so many worse things than where we are at right now. To those people and their families, we keep in our daily prayers. We are so thankful we had all of you praying for Mike when he was so critical! He wouldn't be where he is today if it wasn't for all of the prayers and God's miracles!
I will post an update after his future surgeries to keep everyone posted.
I pray you are all doing well and that you are enjoying the Summer heat!
Love you all!
