There are moments in life that change everything. Losing our beloved Ben, the solid rock of our family—the one who held us steady with love, strength, and devotion—has been a heartbreak and shock beyond words. The grief is deep, the absence impossible to measure, the world much scarier.  Everything. is. different.

And yet, in the midst of this tragedy, we have experienced something just as powerful: the overwhelming kindness, generosity, and love of a community that has shown up for us in every way imaginable.  I do not have the words to express my gratitude.

To each of you who prayed, sent messages or cards, came to the hospital, gave financially, prepared meals, ran errands, organized or attended the celebration of life or funeral, opened your homes and dinner tables, offered camps or scholarships, or lovingly stepped in to care for Owen—I am profoundly grateful.

I have never known support like this. I have never experienced pure love like this. Never felt so surrounded. You’ve carried us through the heaviest days with open hands and open hearts.  Some of you came back into our lives from elementary school, highschool, college days (I saw you Hokies! love you all), Rashkis (miss you Raptors, love you), and beyond. A special thank you to my church family at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church.  I will forever carry gratefully the impact that you've made on my family's life. Thank you for loving us.

This loss will always be part of our story—but so will your compassion. Thank you for being our shelter in the storm.  It has provided a fundamental lesson in both of our lives and I can't wait to pay it forward.
