Saying Goodbye

Good morning. We have made the difficult decision to end life extending medications and switch to comfort care for however much time Paxton has left.

We were looking for a miracle this week, but then we remembered we have had a miracle this entire time: Paxton. He shined a light onto everyone he met with his infectious personality, smile, and laugh. People keep telling us that Paxton was lucky to have Elise and I as advocate parents, but we have been the lucky ones to have enjoyed 5.5 wonderful years as a family of 4. That was all due to Paxton's fight. A fight that often even fooled us into believing how healthy he was due to his outward appearance, even when medically he wasn't.

The timing of coming off the ventilator will depend on some factors. We learned last night that some of Paxton's organs are still eligible to be donated to others in need. He could help up to 5 recipients. We have agreed, so the transplant team is working on finding matches. Paxton will remain comfortable while this very fast process takes place.

I don't wish this situation on anyone. If Paxton has an opportunity to continue spreading his joy to 5 other families who can avoid this fate, we welcome it.

It’s so hard to not think about yourself and your feelings in these times, but for you both to have the foresight to be reminded it’s about Pax being the miracle is nothing short of amazing parenting. You truly are thinking of his future. Prayers are being sent for your comfort of heart… there’s a peace past our human understanding that only Jesus gives. Praying you feel that.
