A Real Update From Our Journey

Another Maddox update- this one not as positive. But let’s be real… that’s been the nature of this journey. One step forward, two steps back.

Maddox had an ophthalmologist appointment yesterday to check his eyes since one of his new seizure medications can have side effects that impact vision. Thankfully, Maddox was more alert than usual (which was amazing), so the doctor was able to get a much better look at his eyes.

During the exam, the doctor noticed that Maddox’s optic nerves aren’t totally typical—they are smaller and paler than expected. This was actually the opposite of what he thought during Maddox’s first exam. We were told this finding is fairly common with Maddox’s genetic condition, TUBA1A.

So what does this mean? Honestly… not much right now. It simply means that his vision challenges could be related to this, related to his brain differences, or—let’s be real—likely a combination of both.

It may seem small, and I know it doesn’t change anything in terms of his care or our plan. But it’s still one more diagnosis to add to Maddox’s growing list.

This journey is hard, and it’s only just beginning. I’m learning as I go and trying to give myself grace. Appointments like this can make me spiral into those heavy thoughts—that my body failed him, that I wonder why he was chosen to face these challenges, and why we were chosen to walk this path as his parents.

These are real thoughts. Real emotions.

But my best friend reminded me of something I needed to hear:

“WE know how much his life is different. Maddox doesn’t. He only knows love and that he is taken care of and his needs are met. He can and will still be a happy baby and child because he has people who love and support him right where he is.”

We are so incredibly thankful for the love, support, prayers, messages, and check-ins we receive. They truly carry us through the hard days more than you’ll ever know. And if you’re walking a similar road, I hope you’re surrounded by the same kind of love and support. If you’re not, please know you’re not alone—we are here for you too. 💙
