Many of you know by now that Martin has been very sick, but I’ve realized there are also so many people who have no idea what has happened over the past few weeks. Rather than trying to answer everyone individually, I wanted to share an update.

In late May, Martin unexpectedly lost the drum studio where he had taught and shared his love of music for over 30 years after the building was sold. It was heartbreaking, but we were already making plans to start a new chapter.

Then everything changed.

On July 7, while we were visiting family in Michigan, Martin became critically ill and was admitted to the ICU. What we thought might be a virus turned out to be something far more serious. He developed sepsis, which led to an infection on his mitral heart valve (infective endocarditis). The infection caused multiple microstrokes and a heart attack, kidney failure and jaundice .

The days that followed were some of the hardest of our lives.

After 3 weeks in intensive care, Martin has made enough progress to begin inpatient rehabilitation at the hospital with the same care team and plan. 6days a week he spends hours in physical, occupational, and speech therapy, working to regain his strength, balance, endurance, and cognitive function. Some days are encouraging, and some days are incredibly difficult, but he continues to fight.

He still has a long road ahead. Once he is strong enough, he will need open-heart surgery to replace his damaged mitral valve. Right now, every therapy session brings him one step closer to being healthy enough for that surgery.

Through all of this, one thing Martin says over and over when I ask how I can help is simply, “Pray for me.” If you are someone who prays, we would be deeply grateful for your prayers for healing, strength, wisdom for his medical team, and peace as we navigate everything that lies ahead.

Many of you have reached out, sent messages, prayed, sent healing positive energy, helped financially, or quietly supported us in countless other ways. We are more grateful than words can express.

Neither of us has been able to work during this time, and as we continue this journey, the kindness and generosity of our friends and family are helping us focus on Martins recovery and building his strength for the next step which will be surgery.

To everyone who has stood beside us, thank you. We are especially grateful to Matt and Alicia, Eddie, Jamie, my parents, Deb (Beyond Beauty) , Nicole (Beauty Mark), my coworkers (past and present), Martin’s bandmates and students, my clients, our family and friends, and last but certainly not least, Frieda, whose guidance and connections have meant so much to us. Your love, prayers, encouragement, generosity, and support have carried us through some very dark days.

Thank you for caring about Martin. We are taking this one day at a time, celebrating every small victory, and trusting that better days are ahead.

With love and gratitude,
Mary,  Martin & Pothole❤️
