I'm so glad you asked! One of the things we are hoping to fund is two Therapy Intensives. An "intensive" is a 2-3 week period where Jolene will do 3 hours of physical therapy, or occupational therapy, every day.
Why is this important?
Imagine you want to learn how to ski. If you ski 1 hour, once a week, for 5 weeks, you will certainly learn some things, but your progress and retention will be limited because it's such a short amount of time each week with a lot of time in between. Now imagine you ski 3 hours a day, 5 days in a row. Your skiing would improve exponentially over that week because your brain is getting enough repetitive input over a short period of time to solidify what you're learning.
This is the same with therapy for JoJo. Except instead of learning how to ski, she's learning how to walk!
She recently completed a therapy Intensive in March. The improvement we saw in those two weeks was incredible. Her brain and body responded so well to the repetition.
We would love to give JoJo the opportunity to participate in TWO more Intensives this year.
Intensive therapy is not covered by insurance (because it's not deemed medically necessary), so we pay cash. Here's a breakdown of the cost:
1x session = $225
3x sessions per day x 5 days = $3,375/week
Two-week Intensive = $6,750
Three-week Intensive = $10,125
So, to do an Intensive 3 or 4 times a year could be upwards of $40,000.
And yes, perhaps it is not "medically necessary" in terms of survival, but we want to do as much as we can to support Jolene's strength and independence so that she can reach her fullest potential and thrive.
Thank you for helping us get there!
