This smooth skin was up early for another full day starting with the Radiation Oncology Department in Orlando. I met the doctor who would be overseeing my Radiation treatments that will work with the Chemotherapy treatments that would be needed to prep my body for transplant. After a thorough consultation two techs came in and the more serious business of measuring my body took place. These measurements will be used in concert with a plan dose target to set the duration of my exposure. It's a complex and technical math formula but in the end I would get exposed and then halfway through rotated so they get all sides evenly. Yes, this is Total Body Irradiation (TBI) which typically uses high-energy X-rays or photon beams produced by a linear accelerator rather than a decaying radioactive isotope.
After, I had a long meeting with my transplant coordination team and my Primary Transplant Doctor. We spoke in depth about the results of all my testing up to this point, my current treatments, and prognoses. More discussion, questions, more discussion and input. Everything was reviewed and I was medically cleared to continue.
At this point all eyes turned to me, the lead Dr. then cleared the room. I was left alone for a short time. I reflected, the full team returned to the room and I alone was then asked, "Are we a go?".
I announced "Yes, we are a go."
Next came a lot of paperwork, the discussion of joining different research groups and studies, acknowledgements of the risks involved, and finally the signing of advance directives and a living will.
As I will be moving forward my second prep surgery is set for the end of the week.
Thank you all again for the bottle caps (donations), well wishes, and prayer.
